The basic probability formula is P(A) = Number of favorable outcomes / Total number of possible outcomes. For example, if you want to calculate the probability of rolling a 3 on a standard 6-sided die, there is 1 favorable outcome (rolling a 3) and 6 total possible outcomes, so the probability would be 1/6 or approximately 0.1667.
Permutations and combinations both deal with selecting items from a set, but they differ in whether order matters. Permutations (nPr) consider different arrangements as distinct, while combinations (nCr) treat different arrangements of the same items as identical. For example, selecting a president, vice-president, and treasurer from a group would use permutations since order matters, while selecting a committee of three people would use combinations since order doesn’t matter.
The method depends on the relationship between events:
- Independent events: P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B)
- Dependent events: P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B|A)
- Mutually exclusive events: P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B)
- Non-mutually exclusive events: P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B)
Conditional probability is the probability of an event occurring given that another event has already occurred. It’s denoted as P(A|B), meaning “the probability of A given B.” For example, the probability that a person has a disease given that they tested positive for it. The formula is P(A|B) = P(A and B) / P(B), provided P(B) > 0.
To calculate normal distribution probabilities, you need the mean (μ) and standard deviation (σ) of the distribution. Our calculator uses the Z-score formula: Z = (X – μ) / σ, where X is the value you’re interested in. The Z-score tells you how many standard deviations away from the mean your value is.
